It was like a wonderland. I could try my luck hitting the best ripe mangoes with stones or wait till morning to pick the once gifted by the trees. I could pass in my exams just by picking kitties (lady birds) and repeating “kitty bolly pass fail”. If the kitty flew from my hand while I was uttering “pass” it meant that I would pass otherwise I would fail. I always made it a point to utter “pass” as soon as she flew and although I never liked my textbooks the kitty always helped me out without failure.

The “litchi” trees were also wonderful. You could pluck the wonderful candies each year they bore to save you from heat. The only problem was the bees who felt that the litchi belonged to them not us. They were enemies yet I felt pity if someone would kill them. After all the might be having there parents back home waiting for them to return after playing all day.

Then there was “gauri” the cow who served 20 years giving milk that was the main source of  wonderful assortments I would still prefer over the burgers and the pizzas.

Tap water in the village was a luxury in those days and the only clean source of water was a furlong away. The frequent voyage to the source was wonderful. I could enjoy looking at the hills that gave a clear view from this place. The colorful fauna and the wonderful birds would become more abundant due to the proximity of this place to the nearby river.

God must have learned painting somewhere otherwise how could he have drawn such beautiful things. I assume he took a bit more time in drawing the nearby river which had beautiful curves and waterfalls. The small fishes and the spiders floating over water would always amaze me and make me wonder why I could not run over the water. The only consolidation was that the god left some rocks in between for us to jump on and sit watching the river flowing from all directions. God also loved his drawing and I knew it because just like my mother keeps on changing the position of her furniture God would change the curves and the stones in the river.

This wonderland had quite a few characters living underground that would creep up every time a field was ploughed. These characters always moved with instruments god gave them for some reason. There miniature instruments were always a reason of curiosity and excitement.

I did not really wanted to leave any stones unturned so I always had questions for my Father asking him names of colorful stones and he always responded with an answer.

There were so many things to look around. I could sit for days looking at them. The only sad part was that the holidays lasted for only two months and I had homework to do. It was every year that my Aunts came for my rescue writing down my homework trying to imitate my writing as close as possible.

20 years down when I visit the same place I feel sad seeing that the mongo trees have been all cut and replaced by concrete. There are a very few birds that fly. Litchi trees are all gone. The river has become a favorite place for labors without toilets to cleanup. There is no Kitty to tell whether I would pass or fail

1. Open the console app config again in the config editor.
2. In the advance section -> service behavior again open the MembershipServiceBehaviour and add a serviceCredentials element.

3. In serviceCredentials properties change Membership provider name to the provider you added in the config.
4. Change UsernamepasswordValidationMode to MembershipProvider.

5. From binding section in the left panel tree view select new binding configuration and select WSHttpBinding

6.Rename the binding to wsbinding

7. Goto security tab and change mode to message and messageClientCredentialType to Username.

8. This binding needs to be associated with the service endpoint. Go to endpoint and set BindingConfiguration to WsBinding.

9. Almost there but WCF does not allow password to be send as clear text so we need a certificate to run this.

Creating a test certificate

1. Goto VS.net command prompt.
2. type in the following command

makecert -r -pe -n “CN=MembershipProvideAuthService Certificate” -sky exchange -sv testcert.pvk testcert.cer

Here CN is your certificate subject you can use any subject name it is used to search certificates from your certificate store.

3. Type the following command

pvk2pfx -pvk testcert.pvk -spc testcert.cer -pfx testcert.pfx

This will export your certificate to a pfx format refer http://code.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=71864 for more information

4. Go to run type mmc

5. Go to file -> Add Snap-in.

6. Click add->certificates

7.    Select my user account

8. Go to Personal-> Certificate->All Tasks-> Import

9.    Browse to the folder where a test certificate was created in step 3 and select the certificate. Select the pfx file only otherwise you will not be able to use the certificate.
10.    Import the certificate by finishing the wizard using default steps.
11.    The certificate is ready for use.

Using the Certificate

Open the Console Host app.config in service editor.

1. Go to Advanced-> Service Behaviors -> ServiceCredentials-> serviceCertificate.
2. Set findValue to the CN of the Certificate you created in our cae it is MembershipProvideAuthService Certificate
3. Set store location to Current User as we imported the certificate for the current user.
4. Set store location to My.
5. Set X590FindType to FindBySubjectName.

6.    Save and exit
7.    Run the ConsoleHost and the service should be running without any problem.

Consuming the Service

ConsoleHost should be running before configuring the client.

1. Update service reference.
2. Run the web application and you should see an error when you try to call the service.

3. Change your code and provide username and password that we created for the membership provider.( user Test with pass123# as password)

5. Still doesn’t work because out certificate is only a test certificate. The client need to bypass some rules on this certificate.

4. Create a console application that will host the WCF service.

We will also use this project to create our membership provider which we will test and copy to the ConsoleHost project.

Configure and Test Membership provider

1. aspnet_regsql.exe is used to create database which creates necessary tables required by membership and role providers. If you have not already setup the database run this tool from Visual Studio Command prompt.

2. Go to web.config and change the authentication mode to forms

The only two things to keeping mind here are the connectionstring which should be same as the name of the connectionstring you provided in step 7 and application name which should be unique if you are using the same DB to maintain users for different applications.

5. Test your membership provider by going to Project-> ASP.NET Configuration. This configuration utility also lets you create users for your application for testing purposes.

I’ll create a user Test with pass123# as password. If user creation is successful then  you are good to move to next step.

Configuring the Console Host

1. Add an App.config file to Console Host.

2. Copy the connectionstring and membership section from the web project.

3. Add reference to the MembershipProvideAuthService project and compile.

3. Go to tools->WCFConfigEditor and open the App.config file

5. Select create a new service.

6. Browse to MembershipProvideAuthService dll in bin and select.

7. Select the contract in next step.

8. Select HTTP in the next step

9. Select Advance web service interoperability in the next step.

10. Select your service address in next step. Say http://localhost:8090/MembershipProviderAuthService

11. Goto endpoint created and change the binding to WSHttpBinding.

12. Another special endpoint is required for the clients to get your wsdl. This is called the mex binding.

13.Create another endpoint with the following configurations

14. Go to Advance->Service Behaviors and add a new service behavior name it MembershipServiceBehaviour

15. Select Add ->  serviceMetadata from the dialog box.

16. Go to the service and set its Behavior to MembershipServiceBehaviour.

17. Add the base address of the service by going to host->base address->new

18. Save the settings.

19. In the main function of your console write the following code.

3. Change the namespace name to HelloWorldService and press ok.

4. On default.aspx add 2 textbox and a button.
